  • "You may pray for an hour and still not pray. You may meet God for a moment and then be in touch with Him all day."

April 2009 Newsletter

Dear HPN members,

We hope you had a joyous Easter and that May will be a month full of new growth, in your yard and in your life! This is the time of year when our country celebrates the National Day of Prayer and I ask that you join us in praying for our nation, your state, city and the entertainment industry on Thursday, May 7th. Here is the verse that the NDOP Task Force has designated as the focus for prayer this year: "May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you." Psalm 33:22

Let's pray this month for the people in Hollywood who have not yet met or experienced Jesus. When you see celebrities in the news or in magazines, remember to lift them up to God and ask Him to reveal Himself to them so that they melt into His arms. Below are some specific prayer needs, but they are only a representation of all of the needs of precious, creative artists in the entertainment industry who need our prayers to find hope, unconditional love, joy and Divine peace in their lives.

SUMMARY:
  • The nation's box office numbers have continued to remain stable
  • HPN thanks the Lord for your emails, feedback and helpful ideas
  • Praise the Lord for Lindsay Lohan
  • Pray for the Hollywood National Day of Prayer gathering on May 7th
  • Continue praying for the SAG/AMPTP negotiations as they drag on
  • Continue to pray for Liam Neeson and his three sons
  • Let's pray for Farrah Fawcett as she struggles with cancer
  • Pray for the California film industry and runaway production
  • Pray for Robyn and Mel Gibson as they get divorced, after 28 years
  • "The Guiding Light", the 72 year-old daytime soap opera, is cancelled

  • Check out the upcoming events for Christians on the HC website

PRAISES:

  • The nation's box office numbers have continued to remain stable, in spite of our national economic struggles. We praise God that people turn to the arts during hard times.
  • HPN received great responses to last month's email. We thank the Lord for your, feedback and helpful suggestions and hope that we can address all of your great ideas. One suggestion was to post more answers to our prayer requests. When you experience an answer, be sure to email us so that we can follow through.
  • We thank God that our prays for Lindsay Lohan are being answered. She is receiving counsel and guidance from Stephen Baldwin and is seeking answers in her life, as a result of her recent personal struggles. Let's continue to pray for her to respond to the Holy Spirit and for Stephen to receive wisdom through his faith in God as they speak.

UPDATES:

  • Remember our Hollywood gathering of industry professionals and churches across LA, in the upcoming National Day of Prayer gathering at Bel Air Presbyterian Church on Thursday, May 7th at 7:30pm. Would you join us either in person or where ever you may be, on that evening for a great day of concentrated PRAYER in America. Check out the LA event at: http://www.hollywoodprayernetwork.org/NDOP
  • Continue praying for the SAG/AMPTP negotiations as they drag on with no formal decision yet. SAG's next national board meeting is April 18-19, so we ask that you pray for the Screen Actor's Guild's leadership to make solid, wise decisions that will support our industry and their members. The standstill resulting from the Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers' last offer (unacceptable to SAG, in February) remains unresolved.
  • Continue to pray for Liam Neeson and his three sons, as they mourn the loss of their mother Natasha Richardson. May the Lord continue to tangibly touch their hearts and lives with hope.

REQUESTS:

  • We need to pray for Farrah Fawcett, the 62-year-old actress who is struggling in her battle with cancer. "She's a fighter, but we get the sense she knows the end is coming," says one friend of Fawcett's. "But we're all still praying for a miracle." Let's pray for Farrah to find the comfort, peace, joy and salvation of Jesus in her battle.
  • The California film industry is dwindling down to almost nothing as runaway production takes film and TV production shoots to Canada and other states across our country. Film and TV production budgets have declined drastically due to our economic situation and producers are choosing to shoot their projects in right-to-work states and places with built in tax incentives and lower production costs. It is seriously hurting our state's economy and taking jobs from California production professionals. Please pray for the Lord to do a miracle in our business as so many local industry pros are without work.
  • After 28 years of marriage, and being separated since August of 2006, Robyn Gibson filed divorce papers against Mel Gibson this week. They have seven children, but only one under 18 - a 10 year old son. Please let's pray for the Lord to do a miracle in their lives, to protect their children, and to lead them and their friends and family closer to Him.
  • "The Guiding Light", the long-running daytime soap opera (which originated on radio 72 years ago) has just been cancelled. Daytime soaps have been taking a bit of a beating these last months, with daytime staffers receiving either pink slips or pay cuts. There are Christians on all the daytime shows and we pray that they can minister to their peers and associates and bring hope to them that will cut through the fear and anger that comes with the insecurity of their unstable workplace. As an HPN member said: "So let's pray for all of them, that they will let God in Christ be their ‘Guiding Light' during this time."
  • Let's pray that the flaming darts of the enemy are prevented from touching the people of God in our industry. The spiritual battle rages here as we wrestle with conflict, struggle, compromise, fear, isolation, and desperation all around us. May our lights shine, may we be a comfort to those who have no hope and may we be full of joy so that we stand out as powerful salt and beautiful light.

REQUESTS FROM HPN MEMBERS:

  • "We'll be having our LA premiere at the Arclight for the Indian Film Festival of LA on April 23rd through the 26th. It is eligible for an audience award, so I'm hoping to get a lot of votes! Deluxe and EFilm have donated the 35mm print, so I can't wait to see it on the big screen"- Greg Helvey. May their film glorify God and be an example of excellent work from believers.
  • Many Christian media professionals will be gathering at the Biola Media Conference on Saturday, April 25th at the CBS Studio City Television lot. Let's pray that it's a day for Christians in entertainment to encourage one another, learn from one another, and lift each other up as family. May the hundreds of people who attend leave with a new love for God and a clear vision of what He's doing in the media today. May it be a life affirming and life-changing day for all involved. QUOTE OF THE MONTH: "...the language of the arts translates the universal longing for peace into the tangible experience of the desire for peace. The arts provide us with language for mediating the broken relational and cultural divides: the arts can model for us how we need to value each person as created in the image of God."
Makoto Fujimura in his new book "Refractions - a journey of faith, art, and culture"

VERSE OF THE MONTH: "And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:7

TIP OF THE MONTH
: We can learn from the Gay community that picketing and protesting aren't effective tools for change. Let's pray as Christians to be wiser than serpents and more gentle than doves as we peacefully try to be (a force of change in our culture) a part of our changing culture: Read the GLAAD Media Strategy on this blog: http://www.philcooke.com/GLAAD_Media_Strategy
