June 2009 Newsletter

Dear HPN members,

Welcome to our JUNE, 2009 HPN Prayer email.  It's summer, graduation month, time to watch re-runs on TV, NetFlix films, Blockbusters in I-Max and enjoy BBQs with family and friends.  But, don't forget to pray for the people, projects and issues in Hollywood.  There's quite a bit to pray for and we thank you in advance for asking God to change Hollywood from the inside-out!

PRAISES:
  • From HPN, Berlin: "We praise God for The Salon on May 26 with Prof. Monika Harms. It was a big success. Our Attorney General came as our honored guest, along with several members of the Bundestag, a state minister, and journalists from both major TV stations, and the leading newspapers came as participants, not as reporters. The discussion was extremely lively and lasted two hours." Mary and Dieter Boy

UPDATES:
  • Continue praying for the people in the Korean film industry. Their influence is growing in the East. The Chinese are watching (and pirating) more and more films from South Korea, in some places, even more than American films.

REQUESTS:
  • Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, did not attend Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in early June, because of his planned medical leave, to recover from his 2004 treatments for a rare type of pancreatic cancer. Let's pray for Steve and his physical, mental and spiritual health as he struggles to recover.
  • One of the largest businesses in China today is the pirating of American Films. Pirating movies creates a crippling income loss to our American Film industry and we need to pray for the Lord to protect us from this lucrative black market business.
  • Exodus, the 4-year-old daughter of boxer Mike Tyson, died last month. She was strangled by a cord on a treadmill in their home. Please pray for Tyson and his family to be lifted up and comforted by the Lord during this dark time. May the Lord touch their hearts so they can embrace the unconditional love extended from their Creator and experience the love and strength of Jesus.
  • Forbes Magazine just listed Hollywood's top ten highest paid actors. They are, in order of pay: 1. Harrison Ford, (who earned $65 million between June ‘08 and June '09) 2. Adam Sandler, 3. Will Smith, 4. Eddie Murphy, 5. Nicolas Cage, 6. Tom Hanks, 7. Tom Cruise, 8. Jim Carrey, 9. Brad Pitt, and 10. Will Ferrell. Would you pray for these men to turn to God as they realize that money can't fill their heart and soul with love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness and self-control. And that only Jesus will truly fulfill the desires of their hearts.
  • The most recent listened to singer on YouTube and 2nd place winner of "Britain's Got Talent," singer Susan Boyle was being treated for exhaustion at a mental health clinic the day after the TV show ended. That show turned the humble church volunteer into a global star. "Nobody has had to put up with the kind of attention Susan has had. Nobody could have predicted it," one of the show's judges, Piers Morgan said. Susan's experience is an example of the immediate fame that is possible in today's electronic world. It was more than she could have prepared to handle. Pray for Susan and others on reality shows, talent shows and those with internet exposure. May the Lord protect them, guide them and lead them to Him as they are forced to deal with the unnatural mental and physical strain resulting from fame.
  • Pray for continued Divine creativity for John Lasseter and his PIXAR team as their newest film "UP" breaks box-office records. They are a creative team of storytellers who keep putting out hit animated feature films for the whole family. HPN members across the world have raved about this movie. May we ask the Lord to draw the PIXAR team to Him as they develop their future films.

REQUEST FROM BERLIN HPN LOCAL CHAPTER:
  • This June 15th, a group of Christian artists and journalists organized a party, here in the center of Berlin, for creative people and their friends. The special guest was Christoph Silber, screenwriter who won the Grimme prize for his TV script about a Turkish-German undercover police detective. He was interviewed about his creative work and his faith. We ask your prayers for this event and those who attended. Thank you for your love and faithfulness!  Mary and Dieter Boy

PRAYER REQUEST FROM AN HPN MEMBER:
  • "Thank you for this labor of faith, to assemble all these prayer needs for the entertainment industry.  To all these prayers I say Amen. I'd like to offer a request: Pray for all the little mom & pop and other small Christian independent producers all over the country.  The economy is causing the normal client base to retrench and slash budgets for media work that our lives depend upon.  As a result we producers are leaning on lines of credit and savings, which is quickly dwindling.  Pray for God to show us the direction to take, that we can be "wise as serpents and innocent as doves" (Matt 10:16), and find clients, sponsors or investors with the God-given resources to keep our operations going."  Steve Puffenberger, Ohio

QUOTES OF THE MONTH:

"They¹re all in pain. It's a profession of bottom-feeders and heartbroken people.  Most actors on most days don't think they're worthy... I have no idea where this insecurity comes from, but it's a God-sized hole. If I knew it, I'd fill it and I'd be on my way."

Shia LeBeouf, 23, admitting the battle that he and all actors face

"There is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every man which cannot be filled by any created thing, but only by God, the Creator, made known through Jesus."        Blaise Pascal

VERSE OF THE MONTH:

"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places". -Ephesians 6:12
